Shalkats will bear one or two cubs at a time and are one of the few species in which both the mother and father raise the young. Parenting duties are shared between the adults, who will take turns hunting and caring for the offspring. Cubs will stay with in this family unit for about 18 months before leaving to mark out their own territory and find mates. Siblings will often band together during this time
